Those who receive the sacrament of Holy Orders -- as a deacon, priest or bishop -- are consecrated in Christ's name "to feed the Church by the word and grace of God."
Please see more information about vocations to the priesthood and diaconate in our section on Vocations.
The Sacrament of Holy Orders consecrates men as deacons, priests and bishops in service to God and the Church. These servants of the Church are blessed with spiritual power and grace that enable them to proclaim the message of God's love, to lead and govern the Christian community, and to reach out in service to the world.
Jesus calls us as his disciples to a new way of life—the Christian way of life. Jesus calls each one of us—clergy, religious, layperson, married, single, adult, child—and each of us has a personal vocation. God intends each one of us to play a unique role in carrying out the divine plan. The challenge, then, is to understand our role—our vocation—and to respond generously to this call from God.
